In 1943, The Saturday Evening Post published Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom from Want” on its cover. My grandmother adored this image and every thanksgiving, we would take a similar family portrait.
This was a big event for us. All my brothers and I dressed in our Sunday best. The women folk set their hair and my grandfather gave a photography lecture to the neighbour, who was called to take the portrait, so every family member could be present. After exposing a roll of film, we would all change back into our regular clothes and enjoy the dinner.
The trend is changing
Looking back on my early years, it is these moments that have stayed with me. These days, everyone has a camera on them all the time. You even see people taking pictures of their BigMacs. Photography is all around us, so much so that we no longer think of it as being anything special.
However in the last year, I have noticed a changing trend. Families going back to big portrait events. The experience of gathering together and dressing up for a professional portrait is just as special as the images.
